After Naxos, we spent three wonderful days on Syros, the main island of the Cyclades. Syros feels like a mix of the Côte d'Azur and the Italian Riviera – but with a Greek twist, taking you back in time. It feels a bit like the 1970s. We stayed at Syros Soul Suites, a stylish and atmospheric spot in the heart of Ermoupoli. A small boutique hotel with beautifully decorated large rooms spread over two buildings. From our suite, we looked out onto a large lively square and walked straight into the marble streets, past pastel-coloured facades, neoclassical buildings and lots of cosy terraces. In the morning, a delicious breakfast is prepared for you in a small restaurant next to the main building. We were in luck, because it had only been open for a month and looked very nice. What I also liked was that the atmosphere here was completely different from Naxos. And so each island is different.

Beachclubs in Syros

Beach club vibes? Yes, please! Of course, I had done my homework. Just a 10-minute walk from our hotel was the iconic Ciel Syros: a bit of a Moroccan vibe, clear blue water, lounge music and no beach, but you can dive straight into the sea from a concrete platform. You can also dine here in the evening by the sea, with a beautiful view of the illuminated church tower.

The next day, we drove to Ono Syros on Agathopes beach. This beach club has a more boho-chic vibe, with relaxed beach beds on the beach and on the rocks along the restaurant. Super friendly staff and delicious food. And the sea water sloped very gently here, so you could walk far out into the sea. Also ideal with children. Both spots were completely different, but both wonderful to spend a day at.

From rooftop to waterfront: our foodie spots on Syros

On Syros, we enjoyed a few culinary gems that definitely deserve a place in your travel plans. At Ciel Syros, right by the sea, you can dine with a breathtaking view of the iconic church tower of Ermoupolis. In the evening, you can also just enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine at the high tables along the water.

The following evening, we had dinner on the roof terrace of the stylish Aristide Hotel, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the islands of Tinos, Paros and Mykonos with a glass of wine in hand as the sun slowly set.

And on our last evening, we ate at Liako, a gem that turned out to be just across the street from our hotel. Liako has a sleek white interior, minimalist but so atmospheric. Think: Cycladic vibes meets modern chic. And the food? Fresh, refined and surprisingly delicious – from creative mezzes to perfectly grilled fish, and the tiramisu here is truly heavenly!

I saw many more nice restaurants in the small streets, from cosy tables on the street under the bougainvillea to hidden restaurants in a city garden that I would have liked to try, but unfortunately we didn't have time for that. Sta Vaporia was still on my list, also with a beautiful sea view, but this restaurant was being renovated. The Mazi restaurant was also on my list, and we saw Avant Garde, which all looked super nice.

Ano Syros is also worth visiting. This village is located just above Ermoupoli and is the place to be for a fun night out. As soon as the sun sets, it really comes to life: narrow whitewashed alleys and stairways lead to charming terraces and rooftop terraces, where you can relax with a glass of wine or a cocktail while looking out over the lights of Ermoupoli and the sea.

Syros surprised us not only with its charm, but also with its delicious cuisine.
